In today’s episode, we will share about the different niches in the catering industry and how you will have to evolve and differentiate your self by building your micro-niche. So let’s dive in

First of all, why do you need a niche in the Catering industry?

I heard a quote sometime back which says “Commit to a niche; stop trying to be everything to everyone”

Long gone the times, when one shirt could fit all sizes. With growing industry, you can have an advantage of having a set niche of clients and type of event you focus on.

This will give you an edge in terms of expectations and events which will be come to you.

For example- In my case, we always positioned our self as a Corporate events catering company which gave us massive edge as compared our competitors.

Third question – what factors will determine what niche you pick?

  • Your network
  • Prior experience
  • Size of Pocket

Fourth question?

Is know your niche enough? No – Go a step deeper and explore your Micro Niche.

For eg – If you choose wedding as your niche, you need to understand what kind of different types of communities in the niche exist within that niche – For eg –

in indian context –

  • in the wedding category -you can focus on Religious community – Arya Samaj, Sikh, Hindu, Muslim & Jain Community
  • In the social events – your microniche can be – either Kitty parties, House warming, small house parties, religious gathering etc.
  • In the Live Events – You can focus on Concerts, Literature festivals, sports leagues etc.
  • In industrial – You can have an industry-wide – focus on say – Automobile, Pharma, IT/ITES etc. – to have focus on that particular niche and try to gain share in that
  • In institutional – You can consider segment-wise bifurcation – from kindergarten schools, Senior Secondary schools, Colleges to Polytechnic colleges

I call this the ABC Model i.e.

A – being outdoor catering – Major Category you want to focus on –

B being – You major niche – Corporate, Social, Industrial, Institutional etc.
C being  – Your micro-niche – as mentioned above. Always try and find that micro-niche to brand and position yourself amongst s

Just a quick disclaimer – as a Caterer, you will be scouting out and execute any business that should come to you, you never know what it could lead to. But branding and positioning have to be clear.
